The Pacific was completely calm. That was the part that made it worse. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Ethan Cole, aboard a luxury cruise ship in the middle of open water with Amanda Seyfried's Sara Whitfield when the ocean floor decides it has been patient long enough. What rises is not a wave. It is something four hundred meters long that has been down there since before humanity had a word for the deep, and it surfaces directly beneath the hull. The ship splits. The corridors flood. Ethan and Sara fight through collapsing staircases and screaming passengers and make it onto a life raft with nothing but each other and the understanding that the thing that just destroyed a cruise liner in three minutes is still directly beneath them. The water rocks the raft in slow rhythmic pulses as something enormous circles below. They row toward a dark shape on the horizon because it is the only option that exists and they both know the creature knows exactly where they are. The island gives them rocks and jungle and wreckage to signal with and one moment where the Leviathan rises near the shoreline, colossal and ancient and completely unhurried, looks at them, and goes back down. The coast guard finds the signal fire. The helicopter lifts. And far below through the water the dark shape moves away from the light and back into the abyss like something that was never threatened for a single second of the entire encounter.
Nine to eleven hours on this one. Building the creature's presence through what it displaces rather than what it does took serious restraint across every cut. Multiple tools, multiple passes on the tension pacing. Every ripple earned its place.
